“Devil’s Widow” second prize of Lady Gaga:Dress for a funeral competition

48 designers from 17 different countries participated in the challange that Rivalation proposed back in September where Fashion Students from all around the world were asked to design a dress for Mother Monster to wear to the Funeral of a friend. The kick of the competition was to figure out how to balance the delicacy of a funeral with Gaga’s outrageous fashion sense.

“The Devil’s Widow” by  Celene Bridge from Curtin University won 2nd prize.

“Celine’s design deserves credit for its simplicity. It is a great use of materials and originality” - commented the jury of the competition  - ”The juxtaposition of sheerness and repetitive details play off each other superbly.”

“Law of Nature” first prize of Lady Gaga:Dress for a funeral competition

48 designers from 17 different countries participated in the challange that Rivalation proposed back in September where Fashion Students from all around the world were asked to design a dress for Mother Monster to wear to the Funeral of a friend. The kick of the competition was to figure out how to balance the delicacy of a funeral with Gaga’s outrageous fashion sense.

Law of Nature by  Medi Calevina and Grendy Jelius from Raffles Institute won 1st prize.

“Medi and Grendy did an outstanding job of combining Gaga’s style with the conservative restrictions of a funeral ” – commented the jury of the competition  - “From a technical point-of-view, they gave a ton of attention to the details of their design; they were very clear about the garments, the colors, and even the specifics of how the dress falls and interchanges.”

Luly Yang, The Monarch dress that started a brand

Enter Luly Yang. A passionately creative designer from a long line of artists – mainly engineers and architects, Luly being one of the latter for 10 years, with a B.F.A. in Graphic Design from the University of Washington and a daily grind that was highly visual but not so “fashion.”

In 1999, the dress that put Yang on the fashion map and the dress that she is most well known for, The Monarch dress was conceptualized and created. Luly Yang: The Business soon followed.

Scarlett Johansson shower cover for V magazine

That famous shower scene. Seems Scarlett Johansson gets to (has to?) relive it more than once in her career: she’s in the new Hitchock biopic playing Janet Leigh, not to mention on the cover of the latest issue of V Magazine doing her best shower scream.

#SEXY because we are talking about Scarlet Johansson on a shower, can’t get better than this. More Magazine covers here.

Motonari Ono Tokyo Fashion Week S/S 2013

On Thursday, March 22nd, Japanese label Motonari Ono showcased their 2012 Autumn/Winter collection on the runway at Tokyo Midtown.

A scenario illuminated by a sole line of light sections, where only the essential and the necessary could be seen. A hauntingly beautiful parade started to the sound of timid trembling little bells. Inspiring, serene. A surreal journey through romantic hues and lace, honoring Ono´s signature. Beautiful models walked, each carrying an outfit, then leaving it behind, displayed to the attentive eyes that witnessed the uncommon spectacle.

Murua AW 2012 collection at Japan Fashion Week

The current Jewellery Box collection from Murua features many of the dramatic design pieces that Murua do so well, and which can easily form the focus of an outfit, if not wardrobe.

While graphic t-shirts, oversized outers and tight trousers continue to sell well in stores, making their way down the down catwalk came a rather darker. Always with an eye on the international blogging community, Murua have responded in kind with a collection that is sure to win fans worldwide.

Standing out with their detailed-oriented garments and pop-art garments, this collection is a breath of fresh air with its on-point, forward-thinking aesthetic. The Anrealage Spring 2013 puts Japanese fashion on the map and will surely follow the successful trajectory of labels like Comme des Garçons and Junya Watanabe with the predominance of the Asian luxury market.

Anrealage Spring 2013 collection on Japan Fashion Week

This runway collection was part of Tokyo Fashion Week’s seemingly infinite showcase of truly novel design. Kunihiko Morinaga is the genius behind this garment story that is cohesive in its striking cage-like constructions and decidedly avant-garde head pieces. Models resemble chic drones from the future and are costumed in what can only be described as epitomized modernism.
