Skingraft Spring 2013 collection

Fierce, leather-clad models stood atop pool-side pedestals last Friday showcasing Skingraft’s Spring/Summer 2013 collection.

The private viewing, held at a swanky Sunset Boulevard hotel, featured a largely monochromatic color palette accented with a touch of Satanic red. Knee-high gladiator heels and flats were near ubiquitous and perforated leather, futuristic shoulders and biker jackets were notable highlights.

Ultra Violette a texture makeup game

French makeup artist Violette has quickly made a name for herself in the industry with her signature play on textures. Though she never had any formal beauty training, she started developing her recognizable, painterly style at a very young age while studying art at the École du Louvre. Now, however, she uses famous faces like those of actresses Demi Moore and Eva Mendes as her blank canvas.

MATOHU Spring 2013 Tokyo Fashion Week

Matohu designers Hiroyuki Horihata and Makiko Sekiguchi stayed true to their mission to provide fresh and innovative takes on kimonos and traditional Japanese apparel. Inspired by a trip to a Kyoto antique fair and their discovery of an old iron tool repurposed as a wall decoration, they set out to use unusual fabrics like a rubberized material adept for a tablecloth and a loose knit resembling a fishing net.

They provided texture to a collection full of soft grays with accents of soft yellow, mint green and eggshell blue. Cocoon-like head gear complete the look.

Motonari Ono Tokyo Fashion Week S/S 2013

On Thursday, March 22nd, Japanese label Motonari Ono showcased their 2012 Autumn/Winter collection on the runway at Tokyo Midtown.

A scenario illuminated by a sole line of light sections, where only the essential and the necessary could be seen. A hauntingly beautiful parade started to the sound of timid trembling little bells. Inspiring, serene. A surreal journey through romantic hues and lace, honoring Ono´s signature. Beautiful models walked, each carrying an outfit, then leaving it behind, displayed to the attentive eyes that witnessed the uncommon spectacle.

Headl_iner a rock street-though collection for Japan Fashion Week

It is easy to forget in the midst of Fashion Week as Anrealage rolls out exoskeletons that wouldn’t fare all that well on the Yamanote line, that by and large Japanese designers tend to produce shows that don’t include anything (even for the purposes of styling) that won’t hit retail.

This is amplified multiple times over in the case of menswear and even more so in the case Yoshida Roberto’s brand Headl_iner whose rock theme collections never stray far from the street fashion script.  His personal love of motorcycles, roots in Okinawa and taste in music give his work direction, but by and large his goal is to give men the real clothes they want and can wear from Aoyama to Kabukicho.

Standing out with their detailed-oriented garments and pop-art garments, this collection is a breath of fresh air with its on-point, forward-thinking aesthetic. Anrealage Spring 2013 collection on Japan Fashion Week

This runway collection was part of Tokyo Fashion Week’s seemingly infinite showcase of truly novel design. Kunihiko Morinaga is the genius behind this garment story that is cohesive in its striking cage-like constructions and decidedly avant-garde head pieces. Models resemble chic drones from the future and are costumed in what can only be described as epitomized modernism.

Yoshio Kubo Men’s RTW Spring 2013 at Japan Fashion Week

Yoshio Kubo, like many Tokyo-based menswear designers this season, took inspiration from sports, but he infused the collection with his signature street-ready style.

Models, some sporting clown makeup, mustaches curled at the edges or exaggerated pompadour hairstyles, walked a runway set up on an athletics track as DJs spun tracks with lots of thumping bass. More from Japan Fashion Week here.
